This mixed-use urban complex was designed to revitalize the historic waterfront in downtown Hampton, Virginia. The complex includes a 176-room, nine-story hotel, a 300-car parking deck with 20,000 square feet of ground floor retail space, and a pedestrian waterfront promenade. It also included the City's Visitors Center, and integration of an existing 150-slip marina.
The hotel utilized projecting bay windows in the guest rooms to take advantage of the 360° views of the Hampton River. The buildings in the complex used a brick veneer and a local vocabulary of details to blend with the historic buildings in the adjacent retail core. In addition, the garage was designed with a unique structural system which allowed the floors to slope and yet maintain a constant elevation on the perimeter of the building. The City Visitor's Center was designed to recall the massing and details of the Chesapeake Bay lighthouses.
This project was completed by Kenneth M. Betsch, AIA while a Principal with Odell Associates, Inc.
