The 18,000 square foot Hilton Head Island Airport Terminal was master planned and designed to replace the existing out-of-date commercial terminal at the airport. The key issue for this project was the Owner's requirement to have the contract documents completed and bids received within four months of the beginning of the design in order to take advantage of the available FAA funding sources. This requirement was met by using a participatory approach to the planning process to create a design consensus for the design of the project.
The scale, materials, and finishes were designed to blend with the island's natural environment and to recall the "Low Country" vernacular architecture. The extensive use of glass was very successful in bringing the natural landscape into the building and providing an inviting atmosphere for this new gateway to the island.
This project was completed by Kenneth M. Betsch, AIA while a Managing Principal with Odell Associates, Inc.
